David Heavenor: Music
STEPPENWIND
()
(Heavenor PRS/MCPS)
Another song about wanting to get away from the city and the quest for meaning in the madness.
'Spin round the house tonight ' is a reference to a CD by my cousin Mairi who I hadn't seen for many years since I had been away from Edinburgh, but in that time she had developed into a fantastic traditional fiddler. Check out her band The Cast with Dave Francis.
STEPPENWIND
The passion in your brow
Leeches through your skin
The mute - boy turning in this house
Rides the Steppenwind
Diamond light and shade
Dress the harlequin
Who spins the anxious chambers of the human heart to win
Think I'll ride up to the coast
Watch the waves roll in
Of all the things I love the most
I love the wind
Bleating of the lamb
Babble of the beast
Contagion’s vaults have seeped
Into the houses of the priests
I hear a nation cough, wondering what on earth it meant
That God punched a hole in the firmament
Sail me up the Western side
On Columba's wind
I long to feel the restless tide
From the green and troubled isle
Running waters cross mountainous deeps
The shroud sail whispers
A poet wakes from sleep
A plaintive violin
Space between the strings
I hear the lilting Gael's lament for paradise
See her bow and stop
Where did she learn to play like this?
Come spin round the house tonight for all the tunes I’ve missed
Just an ordinary man
Waiting for the ghost
To learn to leap the hollow span
Within the calyx of his throat
