THE AUTOMATIC EYE

()
It turns out to be so weary
Coming here going there
Lord your wholeness is so elusive
It’s not in my hands to bear
But I know I was bound in confusion
Lost in this city to die
Caught in its lure of attraction
I see if I stand up and try
To see the automatic eye

For the little minds keep telling me
Look in the mirror device
Keep up all your machinations
Keep nice in your self – conscious ice
Live out your life to keep busy
Live out your life just to buy
For the automatic eye

And my lost girl dreams of the Pentlands
Visits me in the dark
A cold, cold moon on the horizon
Like the eye of the shark

Then soft in her conversation
Like a child wrapped round waking sleep
I notice the night has touched me
And I’m contemplating deep
Strange spirit moves in my person
Making me reach and cry
A new sense of being has awakened
And I’m resolved to deny
The automatic eye

Like a boat round the sound of the island
My thoughts are clearing Iin view
And the bonfire of the pieties
Burns up in front of you
And the bow beats through the ice fields
And a new world breaks through
I fight to keep facing this life
I fight not to slip, be ruled by
The automatic eye.
