David Heavenor: Music

COVER HIM

()
HEAVENOR PRS/MCPS
All verses written in the tiny hamlet of New Winton in East Lothian when I was about 21 when I shared a cottage with a friend. Although the world is full of triumphalist creeds who think they have the world sewn up, the world is full of individuals who find the whole thing a struggle for meaning in the mystery of Creation. I'm one of those. I wrote the chorus years later just before I recorded the song for the album The Automatic Eye with Davy Scott at East Kilbride Arts Centre where he ran the studio. A huge debt to Davy for most of the ideas in the arrangement. Drums by Stuart Kidd.
You've got reason to cry
But no feeling to make you
And all this questioning why
With no will here to shake you
I don't see the earth break you
For a while

You say you'll fight before long
But you're losing a dawn each day
You say you want to be strong
But you're seeking the single way
I don't really want to have to say
These words you've got to hear

So cover him in silence
Cover him in grace
Cover him in darkness
Until the light shines through his face

And who is your guide?
Will you wander forever?
Turn all you can down inside
But all you want is the plunder
All you want is the thunder
Without the storm

You can't stand your disguise
It's beginning to haunt you
You can't look in their eyes
It's beginning to daunt you
I can see that you want to change your ways

And life still goes on
Though you may want to lose it
These days under the sun
Though you know you don't choose them
You still can't refuse the part you play
